As recently as January 2020, the World Health Organization estimated that more than one billion people worldwide are living with disabilities, with over 100 million experiencing significant difficulties in functioning. These disabilities can impact access to information technologies, even though the individuals most affected may also be the ones who benefit most from inclusive digital experiences.

Because the internet plays such a vital role in daily life, web accessibility is essential for people with auditory, cognitive, physical, neurological, and visual disabilities, as well as those with age-related accessibility needs. Accessible design also supports users who do not have disabilities but may face situational or temporary barriers—such as using a device with a small screen, dealing with low bandwidth, navigating with limited literacy, or interacting in a second language. Improving accessibility improves usability for everyone.
